Wayne County Post 11 Shuts Out Chatham County

One word can describe Wayne County American Legion Post 11 pitching — stingy.

Wayne County pitchers held Chatham County to just two hits en route to a 3-0 victory in the Memorial Day Classic nightcap at Carolina Athletic Park to improve to 3-1 on the young season.

The game would remain scoreless until the third inning after both teams left a combined 11 runners on base in the first two frames.

Drew Sweet ‘s two-run double to left-center put Post 11 ahead 2-0.

Post 11 added an insurance run in the sixth inning when pinch hitter Rhett Johnson delivered an RBI single to left after Sweet had stolen 2nd.

University of Mount Olive commit John Nelson McLamb allowed just two hits through three innings of work on the mound, striking out three and stranding six Chatham baserunners.

The Post 11 bullpen was better than advertised as Erik Rosas and Ayden West only allowed one baserunner between them over the final four innings. West earned his second save of the year, and McLamb recorded his first win.

Wayne County travels to Pitt County tonight and returns home Thursday night to face Pitt at Carolina Athletic Park at 7 p.m. Both games are considered non-conference matchups.
