Richard Gerald Adams, Sr.

May 25, 2024, 81, Goldsboro —

Richard Gerald Adams, Sr., 81 passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 25, 2024, with his loving family by his side. Touchingly, this date was also his late wife’s birthday.

Born in Craven County on August 30, 1942, he was the son of the late Malcolm “Monk” Adams and Margaret M. Adams. In addition to his parents, Richard is preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Elizabeth Neal McCormick Adams, son, Richard “Gerald” Adams, Jr., stepmother, Margaret Adams, and sister, Evelyn Hargett.

Richard leaves behind his devoted daughter, Jennifer Harrell; his loyal son-in-law, Robert Gene Harrell, Jr.; his adored granddaughter, Jenna, the apple of his eye; and their tiny Pomeranian fur babies: Lila, Harper, and Koko who brought great happiness to his final days. Richard is also survived by his brother-in-law, Thomas McCormick, who resides in Virginia. Following the passing of his wife, Elizabeth, in 2022, Jennifer and her family moved in to care for him each day. They will always treasure their time and memories together.

Survivors include Richard’s loving son, Michael Adams, and his wife Lori; his daughter, Kimberly Adams; and his cherished grandchildren, Brook Adams (John Brooks), Heather Blanton (Dillon), Jeff Adams, Pansie Jo Adams, and Patrick Adams. He is also fondly remembered by numerous great-grandchildren. Richard’s special canine companion, Boomer, whom he dearly loved, also remains a significant part of his legacy and will be taken care of by Jennifer’s family. Richard’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his journey.

For over 34 years, Richard served his community with pride and dedication as a Superintendent at the City of Goldsboro’s Public Works Department, where his leadership and commitment made a lasting impact. His sense of duty extended beyond his local community as he honorably served his country during the Vietnam War in the United States Navy. Richard’s patriotism was unwavering and he held deep respect and camaraderie for his fellow service members. He truly loved his country and took great pride in his service, both in his professional career and his military tenure.

Richard was never known for idle hands; he was always engaged in projects around his home. With a passion for building, he was happiest when drawing plans, making precise calculations by hand, and meticulously constructing each project for his enjoyment. His latest creation was a special structure designed specifically for grilling chicken and spending time eating with family and friends.

Richard had a profound appreciation for his American Indian heritage, which significantly influenced his deep love for the outdoors and wildlife. This connection to nature was a testament to the values instilled in him by his beloved granddaddy. When he wasn’t immersed in building, Richard could often be found enjoying the tranquility of his koi pond, planting various trees, plants, and flowers, or tending to his cherished quail. His dedication to these activities reflected his respect for nature and his desire to create a beautiful, nurturing environment around him.

Whether he was constructing a new building, caring for his yard, or simply enjoying the serenity of his outdoor spaces, Richard’s industrious spirit and love for the natural world were always evident. His legacy of hard work, creativity, and appreciation for his heritage will continue to inspire those who knew him.

The family would like to offer a heartfelt thanks to Gentiva Hospice Goldsboro, particularly Morgan, Melissa, Angela, Laura, Carol, and Chaplain Patrick, for their compassionate and attentive care of Richard during his final days. Their professionalism and empathy provided great comfort and solace to both Richard and his family.

Additionally, the family extends their deepest gratitude to Richard’s devoted caregivers – his daughter, Jennifer Harrell; son-in-law, Robert; Marie Jackson, Patricia Brickhouse, and Joseph Lanier. Their unwavering commitment, selfless kindness, and loving care made an immeasurable difference in Richard’s life. The family is profoundly thankful for the support and love these caregivers provided, ensuring Richard’s comfort and dignity were maintained throughout his journey.

A graveside service honoring Richard’s life will take place on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont. Following the service, the family will be available to greet friends at the cemetery.
