Thelma Long Johnson, 65, was welcomed into her eternal home on Tuesday morning, May 21, 2024. Thelma was born in Lenoir County to the late Benjamin Franklin and Jean Corbett Long on June 5, 1958. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Zeke Huffman; and twin sister, Velma “Fuzzy” Frizzelle.
With a great love for her family, Thelma looked forward to every opportunity to gather. Whether just with her siblings, her children, or the whole crowd, her happiest times were when surrounded by family. She would always give the babies a snack of sorts, a trait she inherited from her mama.
Always looking for a new find and a great bargain, Thelma loved going to yard sales. She could always find the perfect gift for someone else or something that would be useful in her own home.
Thelma looked forward to strawberry season as this was by far her favorite fruit. Just as much as she loved strawberries though, she detested pineapples and coconut. If she couldn’t be eating strawberries, she was content just chewing on ice, and nothing was more pleasing than a puff on a full-flavored cigarette, especially if it was a Marlboro Red.
Around the home, Thelma kept a couple dozen chickens. Well-trained and loved by her, they would peck on the front door when it was time to roost. More fortunate than most, they knew that a peck on the door meant entrance into the house for their in-home roost.
A service of love and remembrance will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home. The family will receive friends in the hour prior to service. Committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Thelma is survived by her long-time partner, Ervin Johnson; daughters, Tonya Blizzard and Betty Sue Blizzard; step-daughters, Vickie Huffman and Leslie Johnson; grandchildren, Sandy Bates (Corey), Brittany Johnson (Jeremy), Sidney Huffman (Isaiah), Jasmine Huffman, Stephanie Barnette, Tashimera Barnette, La’Shay Barnette, Jazmyne Barnette, Da’Cota Blizzard, Joseph Blizzard (Camille), Jenna Blizzard, Shawn Huffman (Dakota), and Adriauna Manary; great-grandchildren, Tristan Bates, Kaydence Miske, Nolan Bates, Maverick Bates, Trinity Johnson, Skylar Johnson, Landon Chavis, Natalie Chavis, Ashton Turner, Saylor Blizzard; a soon-expected great-grandchild, Ta’Kari Sellars; sister, Lydia Outlaw (Carrol); and a host of nieces and nephews.
