Defending state champion Wayne County Post 11 had three pitchers hold North Wake to just five hits in a 6-3 victory Monday night in their home opener at Rosewood High School.
Wayne starter Hailey King allowed just one hit and one earned run through the first three innings while Riley Sutton (1-0) and Caden Sutton would keep North Wake at bay over the next four innings.
Wayne County (1-0) would strike first in the second inning on an A.J. Verme double, and Lou Castillo’s RBI ground out to make it 1-0.
After North Wake tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning on a single and two walks, it was all Wayne County from there.
Consecutive base hits in the third inning by Riley Hatch, McKenzie Millard, and MG Beyer would put Post 11 up 3-1. Catcher Kasey Jones would cap off the inning with a double to right field to make it a 4-1.
A bases-loaded walk to Riley Sutton in the bottom of the fourth inning increased Post 11’s lead to 5-1.
Sarah Hess’ infield single with the bases loaded in the sixth inning stretched the lead to 6-2.
North Wake threatened in the seventh inning on a pair of hits to cut the Wayne lead to 6-3 but reliever Caden Sutton pitched her way out of trouble.
Wayne County returns to action at home at 7 p.m. on June 19th.
