Hilda Grace Hicks-Branch ended her earthly journey early Tuesday morning, June 11, 2024. Hilda was the most loving and capable wife, mother, grandmother, employer, and friend. She is survived by her devoted husband, Elbert Ruffin Branch; children: Danielle Baptiste, Valerie Johnson (Tracy Johnson), Elbert Branch Jr., and Jamar Branch; Siblings Dalton Moore (Carolyn Moore); Grandchildren Xavier Baptiste, Val’keya Johnson, Tarik Johnson, Paige Jones, Jupiter Branch, Ayanna Branch, and Ava Branch-Tanner.
After graduating from Shaw University, Hilda was recruited by the Social Security Administration (SSA) where she was quickly and frequently promoted. In 1997 she retired as Regional Manager of the SSA US Southeast Region. As a civic-minded citizen of Goldsboro, she became very active in the community serving on the WAGES Foster Grandparents Advisory Council, the Council on Aging, and the Goldsboro City Schools Board of Education.
In 1998, she founded Dillard Academy Charter School (DACS) as a beacon of personalized learning and individual growth for Goldsboro’s youth. Hilda served as Executive Director of the school for 25 years. Her caring, maternal leadership style and sharp business acumen led DACS to be among one of the most established NC charter schools still in operation today.
Mrs. Hicks-Branch was a truly great woman whose impact will be forever felt by her family, and the community at large. She gave of herself selflessly and she improved the lives of all who knew her. Her home was always open to family and friends whether they were experiencing “tough times” or were just in need of a great meal. In her spare time enjoyed modeling and fashion design. She also renovated houses. Her warmth and skill seemed to know no bounds.
The funeral service will be held Friday, June 21, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. at First African Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro. A visitation will be held Thursday, June 20, 2024, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
