Jean Gurley Wilson

Jean Gurley Wilson

June 27, 2024, 89, Goldsboro —

Jean Gurley Wilson, 89, made her way to Heaven on Thursday, June 27, 2024, while surrounded by her family. She was born in Wayne County on February 11, 1935, to the late John Leland Gurley and Ruth Martin Gurley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Kermit Gurley, and sister, Sarah Gurley Casey.

With a gentle and precious spirit, Jean was the very epitome of a Proverbs 31 woman. Not only did she manage her household and care for her husband and children, but she worked diligently at her job and faithfully served her Savior as well.

“Once a nurse, always a nurse.” A phrase every nurse knows, but no truer words could describe Jean who spent her whole adult career as a registered nurse, touching the lives of countless people. For 29 ½ years, Jean served in the operating room at Wayne Memorial Hospital. After retirement, Jean and Robert moved to Lake Gaston where they formed many friendships.

An extension of Jean’s home and family was her church family at Prospect United Methodist Church in Ebony, Virginia serving in various roles over the years. Every time there was something going on at the church, you could rest assured that Jean and Robert would be there. They were faithful members.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro. A memorial service celebrating Jean’s life will be held at a later date at Prospect United Methodist Church.

Jean is survived by her husband of almost 68 years, Robert T. Wilson; daughter, Ruby Wilson Johnson and husband, Mark of Dunn; son, Robert T. Wilson, Jr., and wife, Debra of Fuquay-Varina; grandchildren, Matthew Johnson, Jeffrey Johnson and wife, Traci and Helen Wilson; and great-grandchildren, Stewart Johnson and Ellie Johnson. She is also survived by her sisters, Irene Christie of Fayetteville, and Kay Stephens, and her husband, Michael of Hickory and Cegerna Jones of Kingsport, TN.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her memory to Blended Fellowship, P.O. Box 448, Pikeville, NC 27863.

Services are entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
