Wayne County Post 11 Stays Unbeaten at State Tournament

CHERRYVILLE — Wayne County Post 11 scored in five of the seven innings in an 8-3 win over Shelby Post 82 on Monday night at the North Carolina American Legion State tournament.

Rhett Johnson finished with three hits for Post 11, including a home run. Wayne County has scored 31 runs in its first three games of the double-elimination tournament.

Post 11 (36-9) is now the only unbeaten team remaining in the tournament and will face Garner at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Garner defeated Wayne County 3-0 on July 15 in the Area I finals.

Post 11 is seeking its first championship in the North Carolina American Legion State tournament, which began in 1928, Wayne County has lost in the finals four times since 2002, including a 5-2 loss to Fuquay Post 116 last season.
