Wayne County Advances to Finals of State Tournament

CHERRYVILLE — Wayne County Post 11 broke open a 2-2 game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to defeat Garner 6-2 on Tuesday evening on day four of the North Carolina American Legion State Tournament.

Post 11 (37-9), the lone unbeaten team remaining in the double-elimination tournament, advances to face Wilmington Post 10 at 4 p.m. in the tournament finals on Wednesday.

Wayne County is returning to the finals of the state tournament, for the second consecutive season, and the fifth time since 2002. Post 11 lost loss to Fuquay Post 116 5-2 in last season’s tournament finals.

Wayne County has never won the North Carolina American Legion State tournament.

If Wilmington beats Post 11 at 4 p.m., the two teams will return to the diamond Wednesday evening for a winner-take-all game for the state championship.
