Annie Russell Hampton was born on April 1, 1939, in Duplin County, North Carolina, to the late Forest Russell and Elma Gray Williams Russell. She peacefully departed this life on August 6, 2024, at UNC Health Wayne Hospital in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
In her early adulthood, Annie moved to Brooklyn, New York, where she pursued her education with determination and completed her studies in pharmacy. She dedicated her professional life to serving as a pharmacist for the federal government, a role she embraced for an impressive 38 years before retiring. After her retirement, Annie returned to her roots in Goldsboro, North Carolina, where she found joy in reconnecting with her hometown and making new friends.
While back home, Annie became an active member of the Red Hat Society, where she enjoyed socializing and participating in community events. In addition to her involvement with the Red Hat Society, she also contributed her time and talents by working part-time at a ladies’ shop, continuing to engage with the community she loved so dearly.
Annie was a devoted member of The First Church of Goldsboro, NC, under the leadership of Pastor Bill Rose, where she found spiritual fulfillment and a sense of belonging among her fellow congregants.
She was preceded in death by her beloved father, Forest Russell; her mother, Elma Gray Williams Russell; and her sister, Thelma Doris Russell.
Annie leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories, survived by her daughter, Theresa Russell, and her two grandchildren, Terence Russell and Jessica Russell. She was also the proud grandmother of three great-grandchildren: Tamia Daniels-Russell, Journee Johnson, and Amiaa Wooten. In addition, she is survived by two brothers, Eddie J. Russell (Estelle Russell) and Forest Russell (Evette Russell); two sisters, Janet Russell Anderson (Ira Anderson) and Patty Russell Owens (Curtis Owens); goddaughter; Carmell Thompson (Gregory Thompson) along with a host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
Annie Russell Hampton’s warmth, kindness, and vibrant spirit will forever be remembered by all who knew and loved her.
