Luther Christopher “Chris” Barnes

September 9, 2024, 62, Goldsboro —

Luther Christopher “Chris” Barnes, 62, passed away on Monday, September 9, 2024, at UNC Lenoir. Born in Wayne County on September 18, 1961, he was the son of Linda Vail Barnes and the late William “Pete” Barnes.

In addition to his father, Chris is preceded in death by his sister, Lynne Sugg.

In addition to his mother, Chris is survived by his sisters, Melinda Mercer and husband, Neal, Tina Mitchell and husband, Kevin, April Etheridge and husband, Charles DisDier, Amber Truelove and husband, David, Aimee Barnes, Ashlyn Hines and husband, Duncan; brothers, William Page Barnes, Jr., Timothy Barnes and wife Lisa, Mark Barnes, and Lance Barnes; special niece, Brittney Miller, who was an amazing help to Chris and the family with her care of him. Chris is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews who loved him dearly.

To know Chris was to love him. Though Chris faced many challenges in life, it never stopped him from loving big. With his large heart and contagious laugh, he could make anyone he met feel loved. No matter if one was a total stranger to Chris, he would make sure they felt as if they had made a lifelong friend after meeting him. Often times when visiting Chris, he could be seen with a cup of coffee, a honeybun, a cigarette in hand, and a smile on his face. Nothing seemed to make Chris happier than eating lobster and banana pudding. Chris was an avid reader. He enjoyed Stephen King novels the best. Reading and seeing the stories unfold in his mind’s eye was one of his favorite things to help pass the time. Though there was no healing on earth for Chris to be had, we celebrate he has been renewed up in Heaven, and for that, we are glad.

The family will hold a private graveside service in Pikeville Cemetery to celebrate Chris’ life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Cherry Hospital to The Cherry Foundation P.O. Box 1424 1401 W. Ash Street Goldsboro, NC 27533-1424 in memory of Chris.

Services have been entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home.
