Ricky Lynn Custer, 70, peacefully passed away on Friday, September 6, 2024, at Wake Assisted Living Memory Care. Ricky was born in Hancock County, West Virginia to the late Clyde William and Rosa Custer on January 31, 1954. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Sheila Mobley Custer, and brother, Clyde Custer.

For over 20 years, Ricky proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Following his Naval career, he worked with Georgia Pacific in Dudley. Living a life of service to others, Ricky also volunteered with the Thoroughfare Volunteer Fire Department in his younger years.

Ricky had a fascination with trains and spent many hours with his friends at the Waynesborough Model Railroad Club. He was well-known for his skills in small engine repair and was often sought after to assist family and friends with their small engine needs.

Family was paramount to Ricky, he loved spending time with his daughters and grandchildren.

Ricky and his family worshiped with the congregation at The Bridge, formerly Whitley Church. As in every other area of his life, Ricky also served at his church. He enjoyed working with the youth in the Children’s Church and acting in some of the dramas and productions.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at Seymour Funeral Home. A service to celebrate Ricky’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 9, 2024, in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home. Entombment with military honors will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

Ricky is survived by his; daughters, Gail Pierce and husband, Dwayne of Raleigh, and Sarah Merrill and husband, Ryan of Killeen, Texas; grandchildren, Wayne Pierce II and wife, Gabby, Codey Pierce, Aidan Pierce, Keltsey Pierce, Annsley Merrill, Rowan Merrill, and Asher Merrill; great-grandchild, Aurora Pierce; and siblings, Richard Custer, Carol Hall, and Helen Reeves.

Services are entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
