Mark Hodges Herring Jr. age 94, passed away peacefully at his home in Seven Springs, NC on the night of September 6th, 2024. Born to Mark Hodges Herring Sr. and Lily Barwick Herring on August 16th, 1930. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he played on the baseball team, while also participating in the Air Force ROTC program and received his bachelor’s degree. Mark later completed graduate studies at Duke University and East Carolina University. After college Mark played professional baseball in the minor leagues and would go on to join the United States Air Force after graduating from UNC where he would end his military career as a Captain in the Air Force Reserve. He would return to Seven Springs where he began teaching at Seven Springs High School and later became its principal. After serving as the assistant principal of Southern Wayne High School, Mark would go on to become assistant superintendent and the finance officer of the Wayne County Public School System where his career spanned over 36 years. He was happily married to Peggy Adams Herring, his wife of over 60 years. He was a longtime member and Sunday school teacher at Seven Springs Methodist Church. Mark Herring was a great supporter of public education, an avid Tar Heel fan, an enthusiastic world traveler, and a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Mark H. Herring Jr. was preceded in death by his father Mark Herring Sr., his mother Lily Herring, his two brothers Donald and Billy Ray Herring, and his wife Peggy Adams Herring. He is survived by his son Dr. Lindsay Marcus Herring and his two grandchildren Anna Christine Herring and Brandon Marcus Herring.

His funeral graveside service will be held on Sunday, September 15th, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at Pineview Cemetery, Seven Springs.
