University of Mount Olive Presents Awards During Homecoming Weekend

MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive recognized several distinguished alumni for their remarkable achievements during the Alumni Awards Ceremony, held as part of Homecoming Weekend.

Paul Young, Jr. – Young Alumni Achievement Award
Paul Young, Jr., from Bolton, has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to agricultural education. A 2018 UMO graduate, Young has coached 20 Future Farmers of America (FFA) teams, with multiple state-level successes. His dedication to teaching and leadership in agriculture continues to impact his students and community.

Laura Buddin – Lorelle F. Martin & Michael R. Pelt Excellence in Teaching Award
Hailing from Goldsboro, Laura Buddin, a 1981 UMO graduate, has dedicated her life to education, serving in various teaching and leadership roles. Now Dean of Arts and Sciences at Wayne Community College, Buddin’s influence reaches across K-12 and higher education, where she remains a passionate advocate for students and educators alike.

Kermit Nixon – Lifetime Achievement Award
Originally from Knightdale, former tennis champion and 1983 UMO graduate Kermit Nixon has made lasting contributions to both tennis and his professional career as a regulatory analyst. A USPTA-certified tennis professional, Nixon has also devoted his time to advancing the sport and serving on USTA North Carolina and UMO Alumni boards.

D. Gregg Paul – Dianne Riley-Gray Distinguished Service Award
Gregg Paul, from Richmond, VA, and originally from Belhaven, has supported UMO through over 20 years of service on the Alumni Board, holding various leadership roles. His professional achievements in financial services and his steadfast support of his alma mater reflect his deep connection to UMO and its mission.

Dr. Leslye Kornegay – W. Burkette Raper Leadership Award
Dr. Leslye Kornegay, from Durham, is an executive leader at Duke University. Her impactful work in facilities management and her advocacy for service employees demonstrate her dedication to improving lives and systems within higher education. She is also the founder of The Kornegay Foundation, which promotes philanthropy.

Dr. Tilwanda L. Steinberg – UMO Tillman School of Business Alumni Award
Dr. Tilwanda Steinberg, from Greenville, is a leader in banking and higher education, having transitioned to a faculty role at East Carolina University after more than 30 years in the banking industry. Her commitment to community service and mentoring future business leaders continues to inspire those around her.

Dr. Jason Mendez – UMO Alumni Hall of Fame
Dr. Jason Mendez, originally from the South Bronx, NY, and now residing in Pittsburgh, PA, is a scholar and storyteller whose work in arts-based research and digital literacy promotes equity and justice in education and the arts. His leadership in initiatives like Block Chronicles and his dedication to community engagement have earned him numerous accolades.

Tim Warren – Honorary Alumni Award
Tim Warren, from Raleigh, and originally from rural Halifax County, was honored for his contributions to the University’s agricultural programs. His leadership helped establish the UMO Arboretum, a significant addition to the school’s agricultural education offerings. Warren’s career has left an indelible mark on both students and the University.
