Larry Norwood Mitchell, 70, of Goldsboro, NC, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his loving family. Larry was born in Wayne County on September 20, 195,4 to the late Norwood Lee Mitchell and Ida Christine Pittman Mitchell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Elaine Joy Draughon; and brother, Steve Mitchell.
Growing up on a farm, the values of hard work, determination, and integrity were instilled into Larry. Following graduation, Larry enlisted with the United States Air Force and served 20 years for his country. Larry’s valor and skill were recognized with the numerous decorations with which he was honored, including the National Defense Service Medal.
With a passion for community and family, Larry decided to join the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department and worked as a Detective Sergeant. Proudly serving the citizens of Wayne County, he retired in June of 2018 after many years of loyal and faithful service.
Larry’s greatest love was for his family. With his wife, Debbie, they enjoyed many trips that included camping or spending time at the beach. Having a great deal of pride in each of his children and grandchildren, Larry made sure to maintain an active part in their lives.
A devoted Christian, Larry’s primary goal in life was to maintain a close relationship with his Lord. He lived his faith openly, worshiped regularly at Faith Free Will Baptist Church where he was a member, and shared his faith regularly through thought, word, and deed.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home. A service celebrating Larry’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2024, in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. Brad Mitchell officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Larry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Debra Clayton Mitchell; daughters, Kristy Jo Trudeau and husband, John and Nicole Mitchell Draughon and husband, Al; grandchildren, Logan Trudeau, Chase Trudeau, Kaitlyn Draughon and Lilly Draughon; sister, Gail Peele and husband, Mitchell; and brother, Neil Mitchell.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be given in his memory to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
Services are entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
