The Skies the Limit for UMO Aviation Major Cody Smith

MOUNT OLIVE – University of Mount Olive student Cody Smith has taken his passion for flight from a spark of interest to a promising career.

A Georgia native, Smith first joined UMO to pursue a history degree and participate in the University’s wrestling program. However, a discovery flight with UMO’s Flight School during his freshman year changed Smith’s path.

“The thrill and responsibility of flying instantly captivated me,” Smith said about his initial test flight at UMO. “Being in control of a well-maintained aircraft from the 1970s felt like I was part of history. I knew this was the career I wanted.”

Throughout his time at UMO, Smith found value not only in the hands-on aviation training but also in the University’s supportive community and the dedicated mentorship he received.

Notably, Smith credits Chief Flight Instructor Gary Whaley and Professor Jeff Jennings as pivotal figures in his journey.

“Mr. Whaley treats his students like family and is always working to make the flight school better for us,” Smith said. “Professor Jennings brings real-world stories into the classroom and makes aviation accessible and exciting. Both of them have had a huge impact on my life and career.”

UMO’s Flight School provided Smith with unique learning experiences, from having a classroom in the hangar to gaining hands-on experience in airplane maintenance and flight operations.

Unlike accelerated programs, UMO’s four-year approach allowed Smith to build a robust foundation in aviation, preparing him well for a future in the industry.

“Having more time to build my skills and gain experience in various aircraft gives me a strong advantage in job interviews and makes me a better pilot,” Smith explained.

Smith is on tap to graduate in December with an aviation pilot manned degree, and he has already secured a position as a flight instructor with ACE Aviation Services, where he finds fulfillment in helping students pursue their aviation dreams.

“Being a flight instructor is incredibly rewarding,” he said. “Watching students evolve from knowing little about flying to mastering complex skills and achieving their dreams is amazing.” At ACE, Smith also values the close-knit, family-like environment that allows him to provide one-on-one instruction, a quality he hopes to maintain throughout his career.

Smith’s future career aspirations include gaining experience as a private commercial pilot, then eventually joining the airline industry and ultimately working with FedEx Air Cargo to maintain a work-life balance.

“The aviation industry is rapidly evolving, and staying current on new technology and practices is essential,” Smith noted. “I look forward to a dynamic career in aviation, where I can continue growing and adapting as the industry changes.”

For those interested in aviation, Smith offers advice based on his experience: “Enjoy the process and embrace every learning moment. UMO’s Flight School provides a family atmosphere where you’re not just a number. The people truly care about you, and that’s made all the difference for me.”
