December 15, 2024, 88, Mount Olive —
Everette Allen Coates, 88, of Mt. Olive passed away Sunday at his residence surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late Edgar Allen Coates and Minnie Coates Potts, and he was married to Joyce Coates. Everette was a member of May’s Chapel Church, where he served as a Deacon, and Sunday School Superintendent, and was the original Candyman. He loved small children and even provided a home to over a hundred children as a foster dad. For many years he coached 14 and 15-year-old Babe Ruth teams and one year won a state championship. He enjoyed watching Yankees baseball and the Carolina Tarheels basketball. Everette took many trips to Chesapeake Bay fishing with his family and friends. During the growing months, he enjoyed producing a garden and giving away the vegetables. He loved cutting grass or riding around the farm on his zero-turn mower. He also enjoyed watching westerns on T.V., but most of all he enjoyed time spent with his family, especially his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A service of love and remembrance will be held Tuesday evening at 6:00 P.M. in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Daughtry officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A committal service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. at Wayne Memorial Park.
