Mailande Bishop Schrum, 94, died peacefully on Christmas Eve, 2024, surrounded by family at the Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, North Carolina. She was born in Marion, Mississippi, near Meridian, on May 5, 1930, to the late Albert Harmon Bishop and Ruby Kinard Bishop. Mailande graduated from Meridian High School in 1946, attended Meridian Junior College, and was a graduate of the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. She married Dr. Sidney Brower Schrum in 1950. She began practicing Optometry in Goldsboro with her husband in 1951.

She was an active member of St. Paul Methodist Church and the Paul Edwards Sunday School Class and served on a number of committees at St. Paul Methodist Church.

Mailande enjoyed genealogy and was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames XVII Century Society, and the Jamestowne Society. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed making flower arrangements.

Graveside services will be at Willow Dale Cemetery on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. James H. Harry officiating. Friends may call at her residence Saturday after the graveside service until 2:00 p.m.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Dr. Sidney Brower Schrum, and survived by children Lynn Schrum of Deltona, Florida, Sidney Schrum Jr. of Ocala, Florida, and Phillip Schrum and wife, Holly, of Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania.; grandchildren, Mariah Schrum, Daniel Schrum, David Schrum, Matthew Schrum, Samuel Schrum and Anna Schrum.

The family requests no flowers and memorials be made to St. Paul Methodist Church, the National Humane Society, or Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Arrangements are with Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
