Sarah Casey McCormack, 92, of the Elroy Community passed away quietly on Sunday, December 29, 2024 at Cadence of Garner after a period of declining health. Sarah was born in Wayne County on November 2, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Benjamin Casey, Sr. and Elizabeth H. Casey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Homer “Mac” McCormack and siblings, Ernestine Casey Lee and husband, Billie and Benjamin Casey, Jr. and wife, Kay.
Sarah was an elementary school teacher for thirty years, teaching at many different schools including Walnut Street and William Street Schools, and lastly Meadow Lane Elementary in Goldsboro. She graduated from East Carolina College with a master’s degree in 1958.
Sarah was most known for her generous soul and always wanting to provide meals for family and friends. She loved working in her garden and arranging seasonal flowers for her church’s altar.
A lifelong member of Casey’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, Sarah taught Sunday School and was an active member taking part in ladies’ and other church ministries for as long as she was able.
A service to celebrate Sarah’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Willow Dale Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.
Even though Sarah had no children of her own, she helped to raise and nurture her nieces and nephews, Barbara Herrin of Charleston, SC, Donna Lee of Goldsboro, Janice Maddox (Kevin) of Wake Forest, Douglas Lee (Diane) of Waxhaw, and Jerry Lee (Susan) of Raleigh; and her great-nieces and great-nephews, Keith Herrin, Kimberly Herrin-Morales, Patrick Lee, Rebeka Fraga, Hannah Lee, Liza Lee, and Jenna Maddox.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation to Sarah’s caregiver for the past year, Deborah Wheeler.
