Gunnery Sergeant Donald “Jack” William Hart, USMC Retired

Jack Hart passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2025. He was born on June 6, 1930 to the late Numon and Clara Mae Hart in Anwept, Ohio. At a early age, they moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana and at the age of 17, Jack joined the Indiana National Guard and loved the military so much that at age of 18, he transferred to the U.S. Marine Corps and served from July 1948 to July 1968, with service in the Korean Couflix and the Vietnam war, retiring as a Gunnery Sergeant.

After retiring, he began his second career as a civilian with the U.S. Air Force in January 1969 and retired in June 1990 as the Chief Supply Inspector of the 4th Supply Squadron at Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina. Jack then started his third career as a caregiver for his great grandson, Robert L. Blackburn, who was severely disabled until he passed away on October 30, 2009.

Jack is survived by his loving wife, Marie of 75 years; two daughters, Phyllis Stewart and Linda Hart, both of Goldsboro, NC; nine grandchildren, Kimberly Stewart, Angela Hart Chapman (Jeremy), Jennifer Perkins, Allison Jones Ham (Andrew), Donya Talley (Travis), Jeri Ferko (Jeff), Sarah Cosgrove (Ryan) and Billy Stewart, Jr. (Merrilee); fifteen great-grandchildren, Travis Ham (Danielle), Jacob Ham, Aiden Talley, Kade Talley, Ethan Ferko, Mallory Ferko, Greyson Ferko, Brady Perkins, Josie Perkins, Rylan Cosgrove, Lillyana Cosgrove, Ryder Cosgrove, Riot Cosgrove, Finley Ham and Coral Ham.; two great-great-grandchildren, Wyatt Ham and Verity Ham; one sister, Shirley Clem, and one brother, Joe Hart, both of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

He is preceded in death by one son, Donald. W. Hart, Jr. of Seven Springs, NC; two sisters, Bonnie Swinehart of Portland, Oregon and Phyllis Minor of Fort Wayne, Indiana; one brother, Kenny Hart of Portland, Oregon; one son-in-law, Ronnie Lee; one granddaughter, April Lee; one grandson-in-law, Calbert Lee Perkins, Jr. and one great-grandson, Robert L. Blackburn.

Our Papa Jack never met a stranger, his personality was like no other. He was a giver and had a heart of gold. We will truly miss him with his one of a king handle-bar mustache. He is forever in our hearts.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 8, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro. A service to celebrate his life with military honors will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the mausoleum chapel at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston.
