Home Damaged in Tuesday Morning Fire

On Tuesday, Goldsboro Fire Department units were dispatched to a single-family dwelling at 200 Shaw Court for a reported structure fire.

Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputies saw smoke in the area and went to check on the smoke.

Upon arriving at the structure, the fire was called in by radio.

GFD units received the call at 6:57 a.m. and arrived at 6:59.

They were met by large volumes of smoke and fire showing from the structure.

Fire suppression and rescue operations were immediate and simultaneous. Five fire apparatus and a command vehicle responded with a total of 19 personnel.

Firefighters located and removed a 70-year-old male victim, Conrad Earl Fields, from the residence and Fields was transported by Wayne County EMS to UNC Health Wayne’s Emergency Department, where he succumbed to injuries.

The home was valued at $72,000 and sustained approximately $36,000 in damage.

The fire was investigated by the Goldsboro Fire Department, Goldsboro Police Department, State Bureau of Investigation, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The joint investigation revealed that the fire was accidental and caused by an electrical event caused by an overloaded surge protector.
