James Lloyd “Jimmy” Duke, 65, left our lives all too suddenly on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at his home. Jimmy was born in Wayne County to the late Joseph and Barbara Duke on January 26, 1960.
Jimmy had worked in delivery for Pepsi and Respracare before retiring from Neese’s Sausage. Also known from his time as owner and operator of Duke’s Country Store, Jimmy was quick to make friends and easily connected with those who crossed his path.
For many years, Jimmy dedicated his time to coaching softball and baseball teams on which his children played. Not only did he make an impression and difference for them, he impacted the lives of countless other kids that had a love for the sport. Both Jimmy and Rooster Narron were coaches that were known for their expertise in the games of baseball and softball.
Jimmy and his wife, Sandra, made a wonderful life full of love and happiness. His time with family was second to none. He thought the world of his children, and the love he had for his grandchildren was beyond compare. Enjoying taking part in anything they were doing, his happiest times were centered around being “Papa”.
Always taking a great interest in animals, Jimmy loved and nurtured many dogs throughout his life. They were all special to him and treated just like part of the family.
The family will receive friends on Monday, February 10, 2025 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Jimmy’s life at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sandra Gray Duke; son, Joey Duke and wife, Lindsay; daughter, Jordan Thomas and husband, JT; adopted daughter, Tina Lewis; grandchildren, Michael Watson, Kyson Thomas, Austin Watson, Kayden Duke, and Grayleigh Thomas; brother, Russ Duke and wife, Lin; mother-in-law, Brenda Perry and husband, Wilbur; and brother-in-law, Keith Gray.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Jimmy’s memory to the New Hope Volunteer Fire Department, 583 Mark Edwards Road, LaGrange, NC 28551 or to Cures for the Colors, 203 Cox Blvd., Goldsboro, NC 27534.
