Sarah Elizabeth Nichols

February 27, 2025, 97, Duluth, GA —

June 15, 1927 – February 27, 2025

Sarah Elizabeth Nichols, née Potter, stitched her last quilt, closed her final genealogy tab, and peacefully passed away in Duluth, GA, at the remarkable age of 97 years, 8 months, and 12 days—officially making her the oldest living Potter, ever!

Born in Seven Springs, NC, on June 15, 1927, Sarah was the beloved daughter of Daniel and Sarah Potter (née Nunn) and the youngest of a lively, and fiercely loyal family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Luther, Laney, James (Alvin), Franklin (Burke), Melvin (Joseph), and Milo, her sisters Mary and Olive Marie, and her cherished daughter April Ann. No doubt, there is currently a joyful family reunion happening on the other side.

Sarah was a woman of deep faith, and endless creativity. As a young woman, she embarked on mission trips to Virginia, Texas, and Arkansas, leaving her mark not just in the hearts of those she helped but likely in the church logs and historical records she meticulously preserved. She had an insatiable passion for genealogy, quilting, knitting, crocheting, and journaling. If there was a story to tell or a family connection to uncover, Sarah found it.

On June 18, 1955, she married Irwin Carlysle (Nick) Nichols, a dashing young Air Force officer. Together, they traveled the world, calling places like Bermuda, Japan, and Chicago home. They raised four fantastic children and built a family bound by love and an appreciation for well-documented ancestry.

The family will honor and remember Sarah through a time of visitation at Rouse Funeral Home on Saturday, March 8, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at the Daniel Potter Cemetery on Sunday, March 9, 2025 at 3:00 p.m.

Sarah leaves behind a beautiful family: her sons Rad (Paulette), Neil, and Lysle (Suzanne); her grandchildren Sarah (Alex), Danielle (Aaron), Nathan, Albert, and Rachel; and her great-grandchildren Henry, Oliver, Tyler, and Riley as well as countless nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her knitting needles, FamilySearch site, and countless journals will miss her dearly, but her stories and meticulous records will live on.
