WCC, Local Organizations Host Aviation Lunch & Learn

Wayne Community College, STEM East, and the Wayne Executive Jetport partnered to recently host an aviation “Lunch & Learn” event.

Local school counselors and career development coordinators attended the event held at the Wayne Executive Jetport, which houses WCC’s Aviation Systems Technology program.

Attendees interacted with WCC students in aviation labs and explored program offerings available through the College. They also learned about aviation career opportunities in Eastern North Carolina.

Participants toured the airport, learning about its functions and economic impact as a fixed-base operator (FBO), and also toured Fairwinds Aviation, an aviation partner located at the airport that offers pilot training and aircraft maintenance services.

The event was part of STEM East’s Industry in Schools initiative, providing opportunities for educators to engage with regional industry to design instructional programming and classroom activities that align with curriculum standards. The program is designed to assist educators with STEM content integration while letting students gain insight into regional career pathways.

WCC Aviation Systems Technology Instructor Mike Crumpler expressed appreciation to STEM East for making connections between college programs, local high schools, and area employers. He said the event was a great way to share unique training opportunities with the community, like WCC’s aviation program.

“We hope this event will raise awareness in our community and increase our enrollment, as well as create more opportunities for local high school students who are looking for a challenging and rewarding career,” Crumpler said.
