RALEIGH, N.C. – Governor Josh Stein unveiled his new Advisory Council on Student Safety and Well-Being during a press conference held today at Moore Square Magnet Middle School. The council aims to ensure that North Carolina’s schools are not only safe but also supportive environments where students can thrive emotionally, physically, and academically.
The council will be co-chaired by Senate Democratic Leader Sydney Batch, Deputy Secretary William “Billy” Lassiter of the Department of Public Safety, and 2024 North Carolina Teacher of the Year Heather Smith. The group brings together educators, mental health professionals, juvenile justice leaders, and law enforcement to address critical issues affecting student safety.
“North Carolina’s children are our future, and it is crucial that they grow and learn in a safe environment that sets them on the right trajectory to thrive,” Governor Stein said. “I am proud to establish this council of educators, mental health professionals, and law enforcement to identify ways to better keep our classrooms safe and our children healthy.”
Among the appointees is Kristie Howell, Chief Court Counselor for Juvenile Justice District 8, which includes Wayne, Lenoir, and Greene counties. A lifelong resident of Wayne County, Howell has dedicated her entire adult career to juvenile justice and brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of local youth challenges to the table.
Her appointment is a point of pride for Wayne County and reinforces the region’s commitment to the safety and development of its young people.
The council’s work will begin immediately, focusing on strategies to improve student mental health services, enhance campus security, reduce school-based violence, and better support at-risk youth.
