WASHINGTON, D.C. — North Carolina taxpayers now have extra breathing room to file their taxes. Due to the widespread impact of Hurricane Helene, the IRS has extended the federal tax filing and payment deadline to May 1, 2025, for individuals and businesses across the state.
The decision follows a federal disaster declaration after the storm battered Western North Carolina in September 2024. The relief includes individuals and businesses impacted by both Hurricane Helene and Tropical Storm Debby.
What’s Covered:
- Individuals with valid extensions for 2023 tax returns (originally due Oct. 15, 2024)
- Calendar-year corporations with 2023 return deadlines
- Quarterly estimated tax payments due Jan. 15 & Apr. 15, 2025
- Payroll and excise tax returns due Oct. 31, Jan. 31, and Apr. 30
Important Notes:
- This extension does not apply to payments that were due on April 15, 2024.
- No application is needed — the IRS automatically applies relief based on location.
- Taxpayers whose records or preparers are in affected areas also qualify.
The IRS will waive penalties for payroll and excise deposits due between Sept. 25 and Oct. 10, 2024, if paid by Oct. 10.
