SSA Launches Enhanced Fraud Prevention Tools for Telephone Claims Ahead of April Rollout

Washington, D.C. — The Social Security Administration (SSA) is closer to upgrading its services and safeguarding public benefits after rolling out advanced fraud prevention technologies for telephone-filed claims. Americans can begin filing all types of Social Security claims by phone starting April 14, 2025, with new added security features designed to better safeguard beneficiaries while increasing accessibility.

The program is a great accomplishment for the agency, particularly for those who cannot file on the web or visit an SSA office in person. The new fraud detection system uses sophisticated technology to review patterns and look for anomalies in telephone claims. Where there is suspected fraud, claimants will be required to take in-person identification verification in order to proceed.

We are modernizing the way we serve the public—making both security and accessibility better,” stated Leland Dudek, Acting Commissioner of Social Security. “These improvements increase our ability to detect and prevent fraud while providing more flexible ways for people to receive their benefits.

In preparation for the policy shift, SSA has invested $16.5 million in nationwide telephone service enhancements and deployed surge capacity to handle the expected surge in demand starting mid-April. The agency continues to verify identity for all in-person claims and makes it clear that these changes are part of a broader mission to enhance program integrity and provide high-quality service.

This is also in line with the Administration’s initiative to safeguard Social Security, like proposals to close the tax on benefits and put more money into seniors’ pockets.
