Goldsboro, NC — Saturday, April 19, a tense situation in a Goldsboro neighborhood ended peacefully Saturday afternoon after a man experiencing a mental health crisis surrendered to police following a prolonged standoff.
At approximately 1:10 p.m., a third-party 911 call alerted authorities to an individual in crisis at a residence on the 200 block of Pinewood Drive. Responding officers from the Goldsboro Police Department’s Patrol B Shift determined that the situation required the service of Involuntary Commitment papers.
Upon arrival, officers were unable to make contact with the subject, who had reportedly made threats to harm others, himself, and law enforcement if approached. Given the potential danger, the incident was classified as a barricaded subject situation.
The department’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were quickly deployed, arriving in the department’s Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle to assist in the response.
Authorities say the subject briefly exited the home while brandishing a long gun but retreated inside shortly after. Negotiators attempted to establish and maintain communication in an effort to de-escalate the situation. However, as talks deteriorated and tensions rose, officers deployed chemical agents to ensure a peaceful resolution.
The individual surrendered without further resistance and was immediately treated at the scene before being transported by EMS for medical evaluation. No injuries were reported among law enforcement or the subject.
Due to the nature of the incident, the individual’s identity has not been released.
