Sheriff: Infant killed in dog attack
WILLOW SPRING, N.C. (AP) — The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office says a 10-month-old died Tuesday after being attacked by two family dogs.News outlets report that Sheriff Steve Bizzell says the incident happened in Willow Spring after the father stepped out of the house to speak with a neighbor.He says EMS was unable to revive the child.Bizzell says the office will not be releasing their names to give the parents time to notify the family.Johnston County Animal Control has seized the two Rottweilers.This is the second time in a month that a child in the region has died in a dog attack. A 7-year-old girl in Garner died and her mother was injured after an attack while caring for their neighbors’ dog in late April.

Credit Karma to put East Coast headquarters in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Personal finance technology company Credit Karma is putting its East Coast headquarters in North Carolina’s largest city. Company leaders and Gov. Roy Cooper made the announcement on Tuesday. The company plans to invest over $13 million in an engineering hub in Charlotte and create 600 new jobs. Salaries for the new positions will average over $156,000 annually. Credit Karma is a California-based company best known for offering free credit scores, but it also offers banking, identity theft protection and assistance with loans and credit cards. Credit Karma can receive $20 million in state incentives if it meets job and investment thresholds.

NC Senate tax cut plan includes virus aid for businesses
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Senate Republicans have amended their original tax cut proposal to include $1 billion in federal COVID-19 relief money so that businesses trying to emerge from the pandemic get more aid. GOP finance leaders unveiled the expanded plan on Tuesday. It already contained an individual income tax rate reduction and more generous standard deductions. The new version also attempts to assist business owners that received Paycheck Protection Program loans and other government assistance. They could receive grants capped at nearly $19,000. The new version also envisions doing away with the corporate income tax by 2028.
MOTORCYCLISTS-FATAL SHOOTINGS
Suspect arrested in shooting deaths of two motorcycle riders
WENTWORTH, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina sheriff says a suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting deaths of two motorcyclists. A third person was wounded in the incident. Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page told a news conference Tuesday afternoon that the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office in Kentucky had taken Martin Calvin Cox Jr. into custody on Tuesday without incident. The sheriff’s office says the shootings occurred on the U.S. Highway 29 bypass through Reidsville near N.C. Highway 14 on Monday. Page said investigators believe the victims were targeted by the suspect, but he provided no additional details.

Child killed in North Carolina car crash stemming from chase
GOLDSBORO, N.C. (AP) — The N.C. State Highway Patrol says a 3-year-old child was killed in a collision stemming from a police chase involving a reckless driver. WRAL reports authorities received a call about a reckless driver around 11 a.m. on Tuesday before the driver hit a car and a truck stopped at an intersection on U.S. Highway 70 in Goldsboro. The patrol says truck was then pushed into the back of a tractor-trailer that was also at the intersection. The patrol says 39-year-old Christopher Kelly Blair of LaGrange was charged with reckless driving for traveling 75 mph in a 55-mph zone prior to the crash.

Carolina Tiger Rescue takes in big cats from Tiger King Park
PITTSBORO, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina big cat sanctuary will temporarily care for four animals seized from the private zoo in Oklahoma featured in Netflix’s “Tiger King.” Carolina Tiger Rescue says it worked with the U.S. Department of Justice and other accredited animal sanctuaries to rescue 68 big cats from Tiger King Park. The tigers will stay at the Pittsboro sanctuary until the department finds them permanent homes. The department announced on May 20 that protected lions, tigers, lion-tiger hybrids and a jaguar would be removed from the park owned by Jeff and Lauren Lowe. A civil complaint filed in November accused the couple of recurring inhumane treatment and improper handling of animals.

North Carolina police officers hurt in traffic stop crash
DENTON, N.C. (AP) — Two North Carolina police officers were hurt when the cruiser they were sitting in was hit by another vehicle as they were completing a traffic stop. News sources report two officers with the Denton Police Department stopped a motorist for speeding on Interstate 85 Business between Thomasville and Lexington on Monday. Authorities say the officers had gotten into their vehicle to do paperwork when the driver of a van hit the police vehicle, causing it to hit the back of the car the officers had stopped. Authorities charged James Thurmond Miller of South Carolina with a violation of North Carolina’s move over law.

Funeral Thursday for Louisiana oilman killed in plane crash
SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — A funeral service will be held Thursday for a Louisiana oilman and philanthropist who died when his small stunt jet crashed into a lake. The family’s obituary says the service for Fred L. Phillips will be at B’nai Zion Congregation in Shreveport. It says that although he had dedicated his life to the oil business, his passion was aviation, and he had been a pilot since he was 19. He was 73. The accident is among at least five fatal small plane crashes in eight days being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board. Others were in Louisiana, North and South Carolina, and Kentucky.
