Library Hosts Reading Tails Program With Dolly, Certified Therapy Dog

Wayne County Public Library in Goldsboro will partner with local educator, Heather Best, to host reading sessions with her certified therapy dog, Dolly, on Wednesdays beginning June 9.

This program, Reading Tails, will allow children to practice reading in a low-stress environment, supported by the calming presence of Dolly, a specially trained golden retriever. Programs like this have many benefits for children, such as increased self-confidence, decreased stress, and creating a positive association between reading and something pleasant—like snuggling with a sweet dog.

Anna Snyder, Head of Children’s Services, says, “We are so excited to work with Mrs. Best and Dolly this summer to support new readers and readers who require additional encouragement and practice. It is so important for children to avoid the summer slide and stay engaged with learning year-round. We have an abundance of resources and programs available for families to participate in this summer, and Reading Tails will be an awesome way to kick things off.”

Half-hour appointments to read with Dolly will be available each Wednesday through the summer, beginning June 9, with time slots available during both mornings and afternoons. The sessions will take place in the large study room at the Goldsboro Library.
