WCPS 2021 School Counselor Of The Year Named

Eastern Wayne Middle School Counselor, Renee Phillips, was recently named this year’s Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) School Counselor of the Year.  This past Friday, the Wayne County School Counselors Association (WCSCA) surprised Mrs. Phillips at her school with the announcement. On Monday evening, the Wayne County Board of Education recognized her achievement.

Phillips has served as a school counselor for seven and half years. District leaders say she is very deserving of this award.

“School administrators who have worked with Mrs. Phillips state that she is a constant advocate for students and is always willing to go the extra mile to provide supports and resources,” states Dr. Marcia Manning, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services & Innovative Programs. “As an integral part of her school’s leadership team, Mrs. Phillips is highly respected by students and staff, and always works to add her counseling lens to decisions and discussions involving the best interests of students.”

During her tenure at Eastern Wayne Middle, she has coordinated at-risk academic tutoring programs for in-person and virtual students, conducted home visits, worked with teachers to provide academic interventions, assisted families and students with scheduling, served as the school’s 504 Chairperson, provided professional development support, and is a key contact for families needing extra supports for their child.

In a year where there has been so much uncertainty, WCSCA leaders state the school counselor’s role has been paramount for school success.

“School Counselors are trained to provide support for students’ emotional and academic wellbeing, as well as provide support and resources for families and staff members,” states Heather Winstead, WCSCA President. “This year, the WCSCA is proud to honor a school counselor that went above and beyond to be accessible and helpful for her school. Congratulations on a well-deserved honor, Renee.”
