Two rising Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) seniors have been invited to attend the 2022 Governor’s School of North Carolina session this summer Spring Creek High’s Ciclaliz Morales-Perez and Wayne Early/Middle College High School’s Chantel Chestnutt. The two students were recognized Monday evening by the Wayne County Board of Education for this achievement.

Governor’s School of North Carolina is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically and intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. It is a five-week summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses across two campuses. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and it does not involve credit, tests, or grades. Students are selected to attend through a competitive process after being nominated by their school district or a non-public school.

Ms. Morales-Perez will attend Governor’s School West in the academic area of Mathematics. Ms. Chestnutt will attend Governor’s School West in the academic area of Social Sciences.

Governor’s School is located on two campuses of up to 335 students each: Governor’s School West at Winston Salem State University in Winston Salem, and Governor’s School East at Meredith College in Raleigh. The program is administered by the Public Schools of North Carolina, the State Board of Education, and the Department of Public Instruction through the Exceptional Children Division. This year’s session will be held in-person from June 19 through July 16.
