Instead of meeting at the Maplewood Cemetery Sunday members of the VFW Post 9959 of Mount Olive held their Memorial Day Service at their lodge on North Church in Mount Olive. The public was welcomed by VFW post Commander Jimmie Outlaw, followed with the invocation by Reverend John Moore, Chaplain of the post. Veronica St. Louis sang the National Anthem before the crowd of members and guests followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by VFW post commander Jimmie Outlaw.
Town Board Members and other special guests were recognized by Commander Jimmie Outlaw. Singer Steve Jones performed several songs followed by Guest Speaker, Col. Kenneth Sullivan, Retired U.S. Army.
The laying of the Wreath wasn’t held on Sunday due to rain, instead, it was held on Monday at noon in Maplewood Cemetery/ Taps was performed by Shelton Moore while VFW Commander Jimmie Outlaw and Auxiliary President, Violet Saviak place the Wreath at the base of the flagpole while other members performed the lowering the flag to half-mast.
