May 28, 2023, 74, Selma –

Samuel Herbert DeWitt, 74, of Selma was called home to our Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 28, 2023.  He was born in Durham County at Watts Hospital on May 11, 1949, to the late Clyde Sylvester DeWitt and Margaret Rudell Jones DeWitt.  In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife, Pamela Jean Johnston DeWitt.

Sam, as many people knew him was a husband, father, grandfather, and a great grandfather.  He was the oldest of three brothers.  Sam worked many jobs throughout his life until the time it came time to retire from the workforce.  Sam enjoyed going to Baker’s Chapel Church to hear God’s word delivered by his son, Pastor Samuel DeWitt.  He enjoyed church, fellowship, and singing.  He loved listening to Jimmy Swaggart singings and ministries.  Sam enjoyed good conversation, and laughter, and enjoyed time with his family, especially around the holidays.  He also enjoyed just getting out and riding around with one of his sons.  He also enjoyed helping others when he could, he never met a stranger that he couldn’t talk to.

Three things that Sam taught his boys were you do the best you can, never give up on your hopes and dreams, and help others when you can because we all need a little help from time to time.  

He is survived by sons, Pastor Samuel DeWitt (Jill) and Ryan DeWitt; brothers, Billy DeWitt and Bobby DeWitt; grandsons, Jacob, Dennis, and Ricky DeWitt; granddaughter, Gracie DeWitt; great-grandchildren, Grant, Lane, and Jackson.  He was especially proud of his only granddaughter Gracie, who he called “half-pint” and “The Boss”.  

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at Barbourstown Church of God, 502 Zack’s Mill Road, Benson, NC  27504 from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm.

The funeral will be held at 1:00 pm at Barbourstown Church of God with the Reverend Jim Hare officiating.  The committal will take place following the service in the church cemetery.
