Mary Jane Turner, 81, went to her heavenly home, surrounded by her family Monday, June 12. Mary Jane was born at Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC on December 30, 1941. She was the daughter of the late Richard Wirtz and Lillie Edwards Poole.
Being a member of a military officer family, she was allowed the opportunity to travel and live throughout the world, with Germany offering the fondest and most cherished memories. Her family settled in Goldsboro, where she attended and graduated from Goldsboro High School and the Wayne Community College School of Nursing.
Mary Jane was passionate and committed to her lifelong healthcare profession as a nurse, from serving the students of Wayne Community College in the infirmary to assisting many local doctors’ offices in the same capacity. During her free time, she generously volunteered countless hours as an EMT with the Goldsboro Rescue Squad.
Following retirement, she lovingly took care of her grandchildren daily, prior to them attending school. Sharing her love of travel, “Grandmama” took them on many trips, including several Caribbean cruises. Her love of family, community service, and pets are traits she lovingly passed down to them.
A private service will be held at Wayne Memorial Park in Goldsboro.
She is survived by her daughters, Pamela Casteen Taylor, and husband, Dr. Steven (Steve) Taylor of Goldsboro and Mary (Fran) Casteen of Carolina Beach; two grandchildren, Natalie Ann Taylor and Steven D. Taylor, Jr.; sister, Donna Poole Campbell (Ronnie) of New Bern; and a family friend who was truly a sister, Charlotte Zarouba (Vitaly) of California, Maryland.
The family would like to thank her doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals at Eastern Medical Associates (Dr. Philip Mayo), Eastern Regional Pain Specialists (Tiffani Hoefer), and Wayne UNC Health Care Hospital for their compassionate care and attention. A special thanks to her daughter, Fran, for relocating to Goldsboro to live with and take care of her mother during her declining health.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Wayne County Humane Society.
