Alton “Coggie” Whitley Williams

Alton “Coggie” Whitley Williams

June 22, 2023, 94, Goldsboro –

Alton “Coggie” Whitley Williams, 94, was called home on Thursday, June 22, 2023, while in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family.

Alton was born in Wayne County to the late Lucky Earl Williams, Sr., and Ellen Whitley Williams on August 7, 1928. Blessed to be husband to Evelyn Long Williams for 68 years, he was loving to her and the family they created. A wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he considered family to be his greatest gift.

Alton was a valued employee of Dillon Supply with over 45 years of service. Actively involved as a nearly lifelong member of New Hope Friends Church, he was faithful in attendance for eighty-eight years.

Not only was Alton a great man, but he was also an amazing athlete. As an avid golfer for over sixty years, he held the bragging rites to three hole-in-ones. Playing up until age 93, he shot a 78 in his last game. Staying in the best shape possible, he was active at the Family Y for over 20 years. Setting a bowling alley record, he enjoyed time in the lanes as much as golf or playing baseball with the Elroy team.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 25, 2023, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center at New Hope Friends Church followed by a service celebrating Alton’s life at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Andrew Hise and Bill Garner officiating. Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 26, 2023, at New Hope Friends Cemetery. The family will be at Alton’s home at other times.

He is survived by his two daughters, Gail Williams Mewborn and husband, Wilson of Goldsboro and Rita Williams Pate and husband, Richard of Goldsboro; granddaughter, Amy Mewborn of Goldsboro; and great-grandsons, Ryan Owens of Goldsboro and Alex Owens and wife, Emily of Suffolk, VA

In addition to his parents, Alton was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn L. Williams; brothers, Earl, Frazier, Farrell, Bob, George, and Brent Williams; and sisters, Mildred Smith, Marie Hinnant, and Joyce Garris.
