Lawrence E. “Johnny” Herring

Lawrence E. “Johnny” Herring, 82, Goldsboro resident, passed away early Friday morning, July 21, 2023, at his home.

Mr. Herring was a native of the Pleasant Grove community near Mount Olive.  He graduated in 1959 from B. F. Grady High School.  He then joined the N.C. National Guard, and in 1962 he became an Army soldier.  Serving his country became the Herring way of life until his retirement after 20 years of service, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant.    In his retirement, he began employment with the U.S. Postal Service and ultimately retired once more. 

Mr. Herring was a devout Christian whose motto in life was simple:  God, country, and family.  He was a good man and will be sorely missed.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 25, beginning at 10 a.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive, after which funeral services will take place at 11 a.m.  Officiating will be the Rev. Mark S. Hobbs.  Burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park at Pink Hill.

Mr. Herring leaves behind his four children, Johnny Glenn Herring and wife, Jodi, of Minnesota, Regina Herring of Mount Olive, Wanda Kay Churchill and husband, Tim, of Emerald Isle, and Timothy Ray Herring and wife, Jennifer, of Clover, SC; two sisters, Mary Hicks of Georgia, and Lou Ellen Carrell of Mount Olive; grandchildren, Emily Perlbach and husband, Allen, Matthew Herring and wife, Leslie, Nicolas Herring and wife, Jewell, Anna Bennett, Ashley Bennett, Kayla Churchill Shively and husband, Jonathan, Kristin Churchill, Timothy Herring and wife, Tayler, Natalie Herring, Christopher Herring, Sophia Herring, and Allyson Herring; great-grandchildren, Caden Perlbach, Austin Perlbach, Mason Perlbach, Maeve Herring, Maverick Churchill Shively, and Oliver Herring; and many nieces, nephews, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Marie “Peggy” Whaley Herring; his parents, Earl W. and Bonnie Hill Herring; and siblings, Betty H. Smith, Benjamin L. Herring, James Earl Herring, Helen H. Banks, Bonnie Lucille H. Howard, and Boyce Alan Herring.
