Marian Jane “Sue” Andrews McDonald, 89, died Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Sue was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina on November 12, 1933, to the late Doris Lee Andrews and was the granddaughter of James Arthur Andrews and Effie Jane Caulder Andrews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Liles McDonald, and her sister, Juanita Andrews Faircloth.

Sue graduated from Highsmith Hospital School of Nursing in 1955 and continued her nursing education, graduating from The McLeod Infirmary School of Anesthesiology in 1958. She began her career at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC. After moving to Goldsboro, she spent more than 35 years with Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A longtime member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Sue faithfully served her church as a member of the Vestry, Episcopal Church Women, St. Hilda’s Guild, and as a volunteer in the church office. She was involved in the establishment of the Soup Kitchen at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, now known as the Community Soup Kitchen.

A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at 2 p.m. The Rev. M. Eugene Carpenter will officiate. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. The family will greet friends in the parish hall following the service.

Sue is survived by her son, Ralph Liles (Chip) McDonald Jr. and wife Kimberly; daughter, Martha McDonald Clayton, and husband Allen; grandchildren Lee, Jack, Ash, Grace, and Maddy. She loved all creatures great and small, especially her beloved cats.

The family is very grateful for the compassionate care she received from Hilda Farmer, Julia Kindlesparker, Ann Hamilton, Debora Edwards, Brookdale of Berkeley, Sunrise of Raleigh, and Transitions LifeCare.
