Lorraine Ivey Kornegay, 80, of Mount Olive, passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023.

Mrs. Kornegay was a member of Bear Marsh Missionary Baptist Church and was a lifelong educator who touched the lives of many students in Wayne County. Upon retirement, her love for youth continued through serving in roles such as a Wayne County Guardian ad Litem for Mount Olive children. She loved the town of Mount Olive and previously served on the board of the Mount Olive Housing Authority. Mrs. Kornegay was a gifted pianist and in her early years played the piano at her home church, Rooty Branch Freewill Baptist Church. She also enjoyed sharing her joy of gardening with friends, particularly with the youth of Bear Marsh. She was known by her friends as a continual learner. She loved studying the Bible, history, current events, science, and astronomy.

Survivors include her daughter, Edith Kornegay Pickens (Mark); son, James Kornegay (Joy); sister Millie Ivey Brown; grandchildren: Stacy Pickens Dowling (Jared); Grant Kornegay (Kaelyn); Jacob Kornegay; and many beloved nephews, nieces, and cousins. Her loving sister-in-law, Janet Kornegay, and brother-in-law, Charles Lane, were special siblings. Mrs. Kornegay also had a special bond with her loving caregivers who were with her constantly during her illness.

Mrs. Kornegay was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Kornegay, and parents Carl and Zilphia Ivey.

Visitation for the Kornegay family will be on Tuesday, September 19, from 7 until 9 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 20, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel, and will be officiated by the Rev. Paul Rose, followed by burial in Maplewood Cemetery. Friends and relatives are also being received at the residence.

To honor Lorraine’s love of gardening and flowers, family and friends are invited to place a floral cutting from their garden on the gravesite at the conclusion of the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Bear Marsh Missionary Youth Group are appreciated.
