Carolyn Louise Manuel Perkins went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, in South Carolina.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 23, 2023, at 3 p.m. at First Congregational Church in Dudley. Interment will follow in First Congregational Church Cemetery.
Carolyn Louise Manuel Perkins was a woman of strong faith and compassion. She loved, without limit- her husband, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and all of her family. She was fun to be with and always enjoyed entertaining her family and friends. She was known for her ability to comfort family and friends who knew they could confide in her regardless of the issue and it would stay between them.
Carolyn was the 7th of 8 children born to Shafter Manuel, Sr. and Mamie Cobb Manuel in Mt. Olive, NC on January 21, 1934. She graduated from Carver High School. After moving to Greensboro, NC she graduated from Guilford Technical College where she earned her LPN certification. She was previously employed at Evergreen Nursing Home in Greensboro, NC. Mrs. Perkins retired from the US Postal Service as a Window Clerk after twenty-eight years of service.
Carolyn was married to Willie R. Perkins, of Seven Springs, NC for 55 years. Three daughters were born in their marriage- Jean, Bonita & Angela. Willie pre-deceased Carolyn in 2005 and Angela predeceased her as a baby at age 4 months in 1962 – due to crib death.
Survivors left to cherish fond memories of Carolyn include her daughters, Jean Perkins Blackley (the Honorable Donnie B. Blackley) of Spartanburg, SC and Bonita Perkins Newby (the late Dr. George Newby) of Moore, SC; grandchildren, Sonja Little of Moore, SC, Joshua Newby of Moore, SC and Jonathan Newby (Alysha); great-granddaughter, Ella Frances Newby of White Fish Bay, WI; special like daughter, Alison Newby Taylor of Atlanta, GA; god-daughter, Pamela Chandler of Halethorpe, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and other relatives and friends.
Carolyn was predeceased by her sisters and brothers – Mary Smith, Flora Boseman (Arlander), Ruth Price (Willie); Darlas Manuel (Evelyn); Yvonne Parker (Guy); Shafter Manuel, Jr. (Hortense); Verlyn Davis (Larry).
Carolyn was known for her excellent cooking skills and she loved to entertain her family and friends with her delicious meals and desserts- especially her Hummingbird Cake- which would fly away the moment the lid was removed at every family reunion.
