Betty Jane Fields Coombs

September 25, 2023, 87, Conway —

Betty Jane Fields Coombs, 87, passed away Monday, September 25, 2023, at her home in Northampton County.  She was born in Goldsboro, NC on May 24, 1936, to the late Floyd and Ila Mae Fields. Jane was the devoted wife of the late Wilbur O. Coombs since October 20, 1956.

Jane’s greatest joys in life were her family and friends. She loved cooking for them and sharing anything that she had. Many were recipients of her famous peanut brittle and chocolate/pecan candy. After hours of picking up, cracking, and shelling pecans, Jane gave most of them away. She also enjoyed working in the yard. She mowed her own grass for many years, grew vegetables and flowers, picked up tons of sticks, and pulled most weeds by hand all the way to September 25, 2023.

Jane loved country music and watched specials on TV every Saturday night. For many years, she and Wilbur joined friends at the “Little Grand Ole Opry” for fellowship and two-stepping.

A hugger, a talker, and a nonstop hard worker are just a few ways to describe Jane. Her love for life was a great inspiration for all who knew her. The love that she had for her children and grandchildren was beyond measure. We will miss her tremendously.

Funeral services to celebrate her life will be held Friday, September 29, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Willoughby officiating. A time of visitation for family and friends will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Jane is preceded in death by her sons, Danny and Donald, three sisters, and three brothers. She is survived by her son, David, and daughter-in-law, Cindy; her grandchildren, Kirstie Snodderly and husband, Bret, Taylor Coombs, Travis Coombs and wife, Heather, Susan Coombs, Katelyn Pilley and husband, Travis, and Keeley Coombs; and her great-grandchildren, Larkin Coombs, Lorelei Coombs and Rowan Pilley.
