Betty Sue Bass, 82, of Lucama passed away Friday, October 6, 2023. Sue was born in Johnston County on May 8, 1941. She was the daughter of the late Thedford Junius Beasley and Lena Strickland Beasley.

Sue graduated from Glendale High School in 1959. Sue was a loving wife, Mom, and Grandma. She had a passion for helping others in need. Over the years, she shared her home with several family members. She also loved to bring everybody together evidenced by the many pig pickin’s and family gatherings that she and Royce hosted. She had a love of music and was a woman of faith, both of which she passed on to her family.

Sue worked hard throughout her life to provide for her family. To make ends meet, she worked on tobacco farms, as a cashier, and as a bookkeeper. Together, she and her husband started two successful businesses, Bass Welding Service and Bass Grocery.

The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Saturday, October 21, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Kenly Funeral Service. A private interment will be held at the Bass Family Cemetery officiated by Rev. De Wayne Eakes.

Sue is survived by her husband of 63 years, Royce Bass, and her children, Shelton Bass and wife Dawn of Sanford, Ronald Bass and wife Kathy of Columbia, SC, and Teresa Penninger of La Grande, OR. She had seven grandchildren: Christy Edmondson, Randy Bass, Katie Nobleman, Bailey Penninger, Weston Penninger, Tyler Bass, and, Abby Bass. She had six great-grandchildren: Conner Bass, Colten Bass, Rachel Bass, Anakin Bass, Elizabeth Edmondson, and Louis Edmondson. She is also survived by her brothers, Thomas Beasley and wife Louise of Four Oaks and Morris Beasley of Newton Grove.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ann Olive, and her brother, Bobby Beasley.
