Alberta (Bert) Clarice King Macklin

October 12, 2023, 87, Goldsboro —

Alberta (Bert) Clarice King Macklin was born in Washington, DC on July 31, 1936. She passed away peacefully at home in Goldsboro, NC surrounded by her family on Thursday, October 12, 2023. She was 87 years old.

Bert is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Herman Macklin; children, Sharon (Tony) Carmon of Goldsboro, NC; Ronald Macklin of Hyattsville, MD; and Carla Flowers of Goldsboro, NC.

Bert was one of four children of the late Albert and Clara King. In addition to her parents, Bert was preceded in death by her daughter, Hope Macklin, and her sisters, Gloria Amelia King Jenkins, Barbara Joan King Hardy, and Patricia Ann King Gardner.

Bert graduated from Armstrong High School in Washington, DC in 1954. After graduation, she attended Spring Garden Institute studying dressmaking and design. Bert was married on August 20, 1955, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Washington, DC to her high school sweetheart. Bert was a faithful and devoted military wife, homemaker, and professional seamstress. She made sure her children were raised to respect and love God. During her husband’s tours in Vietnam, Bert and her children attended Mass faithfully.

Bert was blessed with nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. Her nieces and nephews and their children were as close in her heart as her own children. Bert loved children and always endeavored to provide the best home for her family. She had seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild who were the joy of her life, Shannon Macklin of Baltimore, MD, Michelle Carmon of Brooklyn, NY, Ron Macklin of Columbia, SC, Nicole Flowers of Charlotte, NC, Ryan Macklin of Hyattsville, MD, Marcus Hardy of Odenton, MD, Jasmine Hardy of Odenton, MD and Soraya Macklin of Hyattsville, MD. She consistently attended events that honored family members’ and friends’ achievements and life-impacting events. She assisted her family in every endeavor including weddings, concerts, dance recitals, graduations, award and promotion ceremonies, and football games regardless of how far she had to travel. Bert was the family babysitter, caregiver, and seamstress for many of her family members. She was known for making beautiful clothes and household items for her family, friends, and others. Bert firmly believed you should always be there for your family and she worked tirelessly to make sure no need went unmet.

Bert and Herman loved to travel. They traveled extensively with friends and family and she truly enjoyed many cruises. Bert was also the family historian. She frequently hosted family events and had her camera ready to commemorate them.

Bert had an incredible zest for life and treasured spending time with her friends. She is survived by two very special life-long friends: Marion Phillips of Southampton, NY, and Delores Manigan of Washington, DC.
