October 28, 2023, 90, La Grange —
December 18, 1932 – October 28, 2023
Marie Price Herring, 90, departed this life for life eternal with her Lord on Saturday, October 28, 2023. Marie was born in Lenoir County to the late Ernest Alsa and Willie Margaret Howell Price on December 18, 1932. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, James Garland Herring; and her special grandmother that raised her, Ida Singleton.
Devout in her faith, Marie faithfully worshiped her Lord at Emmanuel Free Will Baptist Church. Each Sunday, you could find her offering her talents in praise by singing in the church choir.
For Marie, Saturdays were meant for shopping. She would cycle through the neighboring towns from weekend to weekend, browsing the shops to find the best deals of the day. She was hard-pressed to pass up a sale on shoes, as is evidenced by the numerous pairs she kept on hand. Always dressed to perfection, she never left home without her hair in place, lipstick on, and shoes and pocketbook matching her attire.
A devoted farmer’s wife, Marie took pride in caring for the home and providing for her family. Lunch was on the table every day for all of the help on the farm, and cooking was a skill at which she excelled. Trips to the mountains were always a highlight for Marie and James, as they took time to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation when work on the farm settled down.
Inventing the concoction of mayonnaise and ketchup combined, known to her family as “goop”, even those in her extended family recognize “goop” as the best condiment for french fries and burgers. Her biscuits with strawberry fig preserves were second to none, and the most requested meal for her family was macaroni with homemade meat sauce and slaw.
Skilled with her hands, Marie enjoyed sewing and crocheting. Much time was spent creating afghans for family and friends, and her work with needle and thread was relied upon to hem the new and mend the tattered. Later in life, as trips to town became more scarce, Marie found much enjoyment in her rocking chair on the porch. There, she could enjoy the beauty found in her own yard, and talk with the birds as they visited each day.
A graveside service to honor Marie’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Flatfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service.
Marie is survived by her children, Jim Herring, and wife, Kim, Carol Holland and husband, Bobby, and Paul Herring; grandchildren, Braxton Holland (Ashley), Stacie Holland Smith (Frederick), Carly Herring, James Herring (Meghan Margarum), P.J. Herring (Jennifer Tacinelli), and Spencer Herring (Stephanie); great-grandchildren, Riley Herring, Owen Holland, Hutton Smith, Holland Marie Smith, and Elliott Smith; honorary daughter, Diane Marx; sister-in-law, Addie Smith, and husband, Paul; special caregiver, Logan Phillips; and a host of nieces and nephews.
