Joseph Stephen Strickland

Joseph Stephen Strickland

November 6, 2023, 75, Kinston —

January 21, 1948 – November 6, 2023

Joseph Stephen Strickland, 75, was received into the arms of his Savior on Monday, November 6, 2023. He was born in Duplin County on January 21, 1948, to the late Elbert Hezekiah Strickland and Doris Evelyn Lee Strickland. In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by a brother, Eddie Ray Strickland.

Known as “Joe” to many and “Jimmy” to others, Joe’s preferred name was “Granddaddy.” He adored his grandchildren and was an exemplary role model as a man, husband, father, grandfather, and Christian. The “go-to” person in his family, Joe made himself available whenever he was called on. His children knew they could ask for him to pray over their needs, or “say the Lord” as JoAnne would say, and those prayers would reach the ears of the Heavenly Father. With a selfless heart, Joe loved his wife and was always present for his girls and anyone in need.

Though he was strong and silent, when Joe spoke, everyone listened. Perhaps Joe’s favorite pastime was being outdoors. Whether fishing, shooting at the range, or spending time outside with his brothers, Joe was content just to be in God’s beautiful creation.

A man of strong faith, Joe worshiped at Neuse Baptist Church. There he served in many areas such as deacon, teacher, and youth leader. In his final days, Joe’s testimony was in his encouragement to others to “keep the faith”. His family finds comfort in knowing that Joe’s faith carries him to his eternal home.

Joe proudly served in the United States Navy and served wartime in Vietnam. Appropriately, Joe’s service of remembrance will be held on Veterans Day. A time of visitation will be held at Rouse Funeral Home from 10-10:45 a.m. on Saturday, November 11, 2023. Services will follow at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home, with committal and military honors following at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston.

Left to share Joe’s legacy are his wife of 55 years, Janet Pitts Strickland; daughters, Janice Croom (Sam) and JoAnne McIntosh (Will); grandchildren, Samantha (Grayson), Matthew, Jack, and Nick; sister, Ann Exum; and brothers, J.M. Strickland, Billy Strickland, and Dennis Strickland.

Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
