Donald Ray Oates, Sr., 69, of Lumber Bridge passed away Saturday, November 25, 2023, at his home.

No public service will be held, just a close family gathering at a later date.

Donald was born in Sampson County on June 8, 1954, to the late Thomas Gordon and Verlon Swinson Oates. In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his first wife, Sharon DuBois, his second wife, Betty Belton-Oates, his brother, Tommy Oates, and his sister, Sandra Oates Barwick.

He is survived by his son, Donald Ray Oates, Jr. (Donny), and wife, Kristy, of Chapel Hill as well as his brother, Ronnie Oates, and wife, Patty, of Wallace.

Donald loved to work with his hands, whether it was building signs for many years at Williams Sign Co. in Mt. Olive, remodeling homes through his own businesses, or repairing cars as a hobby throughout his life. However, his biggest passion was perhaps the many dogs he cared for over the years. Donald felt that a home without a dog wasn’t a home worth having, and caring for his beloved pups was one of the things that made him smile.

Those wishing to celebrate Donald’s life are encouraged to donate to their local animal shelter, or better yet, consider adopting a pet.

The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
