Martha Nancy Herndon, 69, entered her heavenly home and joined her parents on Sunday, April 14, 2024. Martha was born in Wayne County to the late Henry C. Herndon, Jr. and Sarah Lancaster Herndon on September 13, 1954.

Earning three Master’s degrees in Economics, Taxation, and Business Administration, Martha had considerable skill with numbers and a keen, sharp mind. She was a Certified Public Accountant and also an instructor of accounting and economics at Wayne Community College until her retirement.

A member of Pleasant Grove O.F.W.B. Church, Martha taught Sunday School for over 25 years. She also enjoyed teaching the annual Bible School. Though she had no children of her own, she thought of her nieces and nephews as if they were hers. Family held a top place in her life, and she was grateful for the close bonds they shared.

A graveside service to celebrate the life of Martha will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2024, in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Barry Stallings officiating. The family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery.

Martha is survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry Clay Herndon and wife, Brenda of Pikeville and Tommy Herndon and wife, Lynne of Pikeville; nieces and nephews, Susan and Jeff Corbett, Reagan and Robbi Howell, Lee Herndon and fiancée, Dana, Jason and Molly Herndon, and Trent and Jordan Herndon; and great-nieces, Madeleine Herndon, Avery Herndon and Sophia Lawrence. She is also survived by some dear friends and neighbors, Vernon and Sheila Shivar, and their daughter, Amy Shivar.
