Charles B. Aycock English Teacher Arrested on Friday

PIKEVILLE — Charles B. Aycock High School English teacher Andrew Clifton Richards, 37, Walstonburg, was arrested on Friday morning.

On April 26, a female filed a report with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office alleging an inappropriate relationship with a teacher while she was a student at Charles B. Aycock.

Richards resigned on Friday morning, effective immediately. He had been employed by Wayne County Public Schools since August of 2011.

A subsequent investigation revealed that Richards was engaged in a relationship with the female during the 2014-2015 school year, which resulted in Richards being charged with three counts of indecent liberties with a student.

Richards was given a $25,000 unsecured bond.

Wayne County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Marc Whichard released the following statement saying, “All school district employees are expected to maintain the highest professional, moral, and ethical standards in their interactions with students. While we are limited in what we can say, as this is a personnel matter, we can say that the school district takes any concerns about inappropriate conduct by staff very seriously. We appreciate the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office for its support with this matter.”

At this time, detectives have no reason to suspect that Richards was involved with any additional students. This investigation is still ongoing.
