Three Wayne County American Legion Post 11 pitchers combined to allow just two runs while the offense exploded for 13 runs including a 3-run homer from Davis Albert, to turn back the Southeastern Collegiate Baseball League’s Carolina Yankees, 13-2 on Friday night at Carolina Athletic Park.
Post 11 would score in every inning except the fifth off Yankees’ starter Tyler McRae.
Wyatt Lassiter would start the ball rolling with a first-pitch double to left and score on three consecutive walks to John McLamb, Jackson Hood, and Drew Sweet. Landon Sutton followed with a single to right field to make it 2-0 Wayne.
After the Yankees tied it at 2-2 in the top of the second inning on two bases-loaded walks, Post 11 Starter Gabe Adams settled down and struck out the side and it was all Wayne County from there.
Wayne County (2-1) would make it a 5-2 game in the second inning. After a free pass to Albert loaded the bases, John McLamb would deliver a sharp ground ball past the diving second baseman to make it 4-2. Another single to straightaway center from Hood would make the score 5-2.
In the third inning, Byrd would draw a leadoff walk before Lassiter would reach base for the third straight time on a base hit to left before Albert would rip a line drive over the fence in right to make it 8-2 Wayne County after three innings.
Post 11 broke it wide open in the fourth with one out when Sweet doubled to left field. After Tanner Woodard walked, Connor Radford drove in Sweet and Woodard. Another wild pitch would plate Woodard making it 11-2 after four innings.
Wayne County starter Gabe Adams would earn the win striking out seven through four innings. Davis Hathaway would take command in the fifth and sixth innings striking out six batters of his own.
In the seventh inning, “Hells Bells” could be heard over the PA and that meant Wayne closer Ayden West would shut it down to end the game.
Wayne County returns to action Monday night at 7 vs Chatham County at Carolina Athletic Park.
