June 10, 2024, 67, Goldsboro —
Peggy Hill Berry died unexpectedly at UNC Wayne Hospital on June 10, 2024. She was born October 6, 1946, in Johnston County, North Carolina, and grew up in the McGee’s Crossroads area. She is preceded in death by her parents Millard and Emeline Higgins; her brother Millard Higgins, Jr.; and her first husband Chaplain Leon Hill.
Peggy was an avid reader and had an extensive library of books. She loved to share books with others and donated a lot as well. Her favorite authors were Joey Jones, Nicholas Sparks, and James Patterson. She read the Bible through from Genesis to Revelations more times than anyone even knows.
Peggy went back to college and became a Social Worker after her husband, Leon, passed away. She had a strong faith and a dedication to helping people of all ages. Even after she retired from social work, she volunteered to deliver meals through Meals On Wheels of Wayne County.
Peggy loved her family and was so proud when she became a great-grandmother this past year. She enjoyed cooking for her family, especially for holidays and birthdays. She made the best chicken pastry, “party chicken”, carrot cake, and strawberry cake, and each of her family members had a special request for every occasion. Peggy had a strong affinity for her kitty cats and took care of every stray that showed up in the yard.
Peggy is survived by her husband Roger Berry; son Jimmy Hill and wife Liza; daughter Sherry Hill Bowden and husband Bruce; grandchildren Corri Hill Hostetler and husband Jacob; Hunter Bowden and wife Logan; and Sydney Bowden; and two beautiful little great-granddaughters, Tatum and Harvest. Roger’s daughters, Samantha and Christy Berry, were also very special to Peggy.
Visitation will be at 6 pm, Thursday, June 13, at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, 2873 Hwy 117, Dudley, NC 28333, with a service at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel. A private graveside service will be held later.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peggy’s memory to Meals On Wheels of Wayne County, North Carolina, or to Gideons International.
Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family and online condolences may be sent through www.shumate-faulk.com.
