PINEHURST — Kirby Yeargin, a student in Wayne Community College’s Turfgrass Management program, is currently gaining valuable experience in his Golf Course Maintenance internship at Pinehurst Resort this summer.
With a lifelong passion for golf and a deep interest in golf course maintenance, Yeargin was drawn to Wayne Community College’s Turfgrass Management program. He particularly values the program’s emphasis on hands-on learning, which he credits for his academic success.
“WCC has opened up many opportunities for my future career in the turfgrass industry,” Yeargin said. “It has even opened the door for my internship this summer at Pinehurst Resort, the host of the 2024 U.S. Open Championship. If I were to speak to a student interested in furthering their education by enrolling in the Turfgrass Management program at WCC, I would say they should absolutely do it. The program provides a great learning experience and guides students into their professional careers.
Students enrolled in the program can establish connections with local golf courses and other field-related locations during class trips to meet with superintendents and learn about their operational processes.
Last year, WCC Turfgrass Management students had the opportunity to attend the 2023 Southeast Regional Sports Turf Conference & Trade Show in Myrtle Beach, where we connected with industry professionals from all over the Carolinas.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience at WCC. My instructors are wonderful, and I can’t thank them enough for the opportunities and resources they have given me to succeed in my career.”
